1/4teaspoonsaltto balance sweetness
2tablespoonscornstarchfor thickening the filling
1tablespoonbutterfor richness
Instructions
Prepare the Apples
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Aim for uniform thickness to ensure even cooking.
Place the sliced apples into a large mixing bowl and drizzle with lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples, which will help prevent browning and add a fresh flavor.
Mix the Filling
In a separate bowl, combine the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, salt, and cornstarch. Mix well to ensure the cornstarch is evenly distributed.
Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples and toss gently until all the apple slices are coated. This will help draw out the juices from the apples and create a flavorful filling.
Cook the Filling
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the apple mixture.
Cook the apples for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften but are not fully cooked. This step helps to release the juices and combine the flavors.
Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly before using it in your pie. This will allow the filling to thicken as it cools.
Notes
This apple pie filling can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Just make sure to cool it completely before freezing.
