Ingredients

For the Blackberry Filling

  • 4 cups fresh blackberries washed and drained
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar adjust based on berry sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch for thickening
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavor

For the Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats not instant
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds optional for crunch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon for flavor

Instructions

Prepare the Blackberry Filling

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures the crisp bakes evenly.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the fresh blackberries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Gently toss until the blackberries are evenly coated. The sugar will help draw out the juices from the blackberries, creating a delicious filling.
  • Transfer the blackberry mixture to a 9-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Make the Crisp Topping

  • In a separate bowl, mix together the old-fashioned oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, melted butter, sliced almonds, and cinnamon. Use a spoon or your hands to combine until the mixture is crumbly. The melted butter will help bind the ingredients together and create a crispy texture.
  • Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the blackberry filling in the baking dish.

Bake the Crisp

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the blackberry filling is bubbling. This indicates that the filling is cooked and the flavors have melded together.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly, making it easier to serve.

Serve

  • Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.

Notes

For best results, use ripe blackberries. You can substitute with other berries if desired. This crisp can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
