Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water around 110°F/43°C
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Topping Ingredients
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese or other cheeses for variation
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

Method
 

Making Breadsticks
  1. Combine warm water and yeast in a mixing bowl; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix in flour, salt, and olive oil; stir until you have a shaggy dough.
  3. Knead the dough by hand for about 5 minutes until it reaches a smooth, elastic texture.
  4. Cover it with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough gently, then roll it out on a floured surface to about half an inch thick.
  6. Cut into strips for the iconic breadstick shape.
  7. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, sprinkle with cheese and seasonings.
  8. Preheat the oven to 400°F and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
