Ingredients

For the Goulash

  • 1 lb ground beef use 80/20 for best flavor
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes 14.5 oz can, undrained
  • 1 can tomato sauce 15 oz can
  • 2 cups beef broth low sodium preferred
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni uncooked
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning or to taste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients

  • Finely chop the onion and green bell pepper, and mince the garlic. This will help them cook evenly and blend into the dish.
  • Measure out all other ingredients to have them ready for cooking.

Cook the Beef

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  • Drain excess fat if necessary, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pot for flavor.

Add Vegetables

  • Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the pot with the beef. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Combine Ingredients

  • Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, beef broth, elbow macaroni, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened.

Finish and Serve

  • Once the pasta is tender, remove the pot from heat. Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and well combined.
  • Serve the goulash hot, topped with the remaining cheddar cheese.

Notes

This dish can be customized with your favorite vegetables or spices. For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños.
